Author of the Month: Vicki Lesage Interview

Can you believe, it’s mid-October already? The days are flying by and it’s madness! We’re lucky today to be sharing with you one of our newfound favourite authors, who we believe is underrated and under-appreciated in the book blogging community.

Vicky Lesage writes hilariously funny and relatable memoirs and was kind enough to agree to a short interview. We hope you enjoy learning about her writing process and life outside of being an author.

We love to showcase lesser known, but still amazing, authors on our Author of the Month posts. If you enjoy stories about travel, the delightful (and sometimes not so delightful) experience of raising children, assimilating to a foreign culture and cocktail recipes then Lesage’s memoirs are not ones to miss!

Author Spotlight: Vicki Lesage

Amazon Bestselling Author Vicki Lesage proves daily that raising French kids isn’t as easy as the hype lets on. In her snippets of spare time, she writes, sips bubbly, and prepares for the impending zombie apocalypse. She lives in St. Louis (after 11 years in Paris) with her French husband, rambunctious son, and charming daughter, all of whom mercifully don’t laugh when she says “au revoir.” She penned the American in Paris series in between diaper changes and wine refills.

Our Interview:

Could you ever see yourself writing a book outside of the memoir genre? If so, what genre would it be?

My kids are learning to read right now and they can’t get enough! So I’m thinking it could be cool to write a children’s book. That would be a huge departure from what I’ve written before, but I would love the challenge of learning something new.

Your first novel, Confessions of a Paris Party Girl, was published in 2014 and since then you’ve been very prolific in publishing a further five books and numerous anthologies that have been well received. What inspired you to write a memoir of your time as an expat in Paris?

I used to blog about life in Paris. The people who read it convinced me I was really funny and should write a book. I figured it would be super easy to take all those posts and just, voila, turn them into a book. Yeah… not so much. I had to rewrite and restructure everything. But the blog did help me remember tiny details of things that happened throughout my time in Paris and it was fun to see my stories come to life in an actual book I could hold in my hands.

Confessions of an Expat in Paris, released July 5, 2019, was the first of your books that I read. It truly managed to capture your experiences so far in Paris – both hilariously funny and full of bureaucratic nightmares. What I really enjoyed about it though, were the cocktails between each chapter that related to your time in Paris. Which cocktail was your favourite, and why?

It’s hard to choose, but I really like the Sangria Spritzer. It’s great year-round—you can enjoy it in the summer because it’s so summery or in the winter to remind you of how summery summer can be!

Of all your books published, which one holds a special place in your heart and why?

Confessions of an Expat in Paris, even though it’s my newest book, holds a special place in my heart. I wrote a lot of those stories while I was on maternity leave and had both my kids home with me. That summer was really hard for me, but you know how things often seem better when you look back on them? Now when I reminisce about those days, I just remember how cute and little my kids used to be (they are still very cute but they’re not as little anymore!) and I love that I was able to capture a lot of those moments in writing.

Do you read often? What book have you enjoyed reading the most in 2019, so far?

As a writer of humorous memoirs, you’d think I’d be sick of the genre, but I actually love reading other humorous memoirs. This year I read Bedwetter by Sarah Silverman, My Squirrel Days by Ellie Kemper, and Believe Me by Eddie Izzard. All are hilarious, and it’s so interesting to get a glimpse into their lives.

You’ve mentioned a lot of funny, quirky and entertaining stories from your time as an expat in Paris. What is your favourite place to travel to besides for France?

When I lived in France, I loved traveling around Europe. Italy is one of my favorites—the food, the wine, the landscape, the history, and the lovely people. Iceland is also amazing, and I hope to go back one day. Now that I’m living in the U.S. though, I’m really enjoying short weekend trips to various cities within driving distance of St. Louis—Iowa City, Milwaukee, Louisville, etc. It’s nice to visit the “heartland” of America, not just the big cities everyone typically goes to.

Author of September: Madeline Ash

It’s that time again! A new month and a fresh spotlight on an author we are currently gaga over – Madeline Ash.

With the release of Her Cowboy King in July, as well as the up-coming release of His Billionaire Bride, out September 3rd, we couldn’t think of a better author to spotlight than Madeline Ash.

We adore her books and think they deserve more attention! She also just so happens to be a lovely human being that’s been so kind to us during the start of our bookish blogging journey.

Author Spotlight: Madeline Ash

Madeline is a contemporary romance author who has always lived in Melbourne. She is a two-time RITA Award finalist and winner of Australia’s Romantic Book of the Year award (RUBY). She is a proud member of Romance Writers of Australia and meets with her critique group once a month.

Madeline is emotionally allergic to spontaneity, and yet doesn’t mind the weather that drags her into rain when she’s planned for sunshine. She likes to call this her wild side. She’s a Virgo, vegan, and once had a romantic suspense-style dream in which the hero was a shredded lettuce sandwich and the villain was a cherry tomato. The tomato got away. She took the dream as a sign that she’d better stick to writing contemporary romance.

Her stories have strong heroines, compassionate heroes, and as much dialogue as she can cram in. As for why she writes romance, she’s in a long-term relationship with the genre and writing such stories makes it happy.

HER COWBOY KING

THIS BOOK. The Jaroka brothers gave us the FEELS. Honestly, this was such an unexpected read. We ADORED it and read it practically in one sitting. We were so pleasantly surprised. The combination of likeable characters, witty banter and an abundance of tropes that we can’t resist left us with no response other than: YES YES YES.

THE MORGAN SISTERS

The Wedding Obsession – If you’re looking for a book that’s emotional, beautifully written and thought-provoking then this is for you. This made us consider the unexpected emotional impact of organ transplantation and the stigmatism associated with survivor’s guilt. A truly memorable read.

His Billionaire Bride – One of our favourite opposites-attract romances of the year featuring a savvy, independent businesswoman and delightfully charming artist. We couldn’t put this book down and fell completely head-over-heels for the creative Edwin Prince. His hair, his charm, his kindness. His everything. This is a story you don’t want to miss!

RAGS TO RICHES

The Playboy – A Byron-Bay opposites-attract romance featuring a sexy, playboy surfer and wealthy actress. When Parker and Alexia reconnect the sparks fly in an off-the-charts sweet and steamy novella read. This is the perfect summer beach read that not only showcases believable characters but the quintessential Aussie lifestyle.

The Playboy is currently FREE on a promotional sale on Amazon. If you’ve been unsure about giving Rags to Riches a try, this is the perfect opportunity. You genuinely cannot go wrong with a free read! Especially with this author. Enjoy!

Her Secret Prince – What happens when your long-lost love turns up ten years too late? This charming, delightful read quickly captured our attention and hearts. A royal-romance trope, this novella ticked all of the right boxes and was the perfect blend of loveable characters and royal drama in a second-chance romance.

You For Christmas – A charming Christmastime story about a hardened woman seeking refuge in a town she once turned her back on. Having faced the harsh realities of life and trauma at a young age, Regan finds refuge in Felix, the man who she helped all of those years ago. Opposites attract in this sweet, swoon-worthy novella.

Breaking Good – A sweet second-chance romance about lost love, the battle against mental illness and the painful consequences of lost time. This story melted our hearts and won us over with its honest, imperfect characters. An emotional, truly beautiful story about reconnecting with your past and fighting for a future.
