20 Questions Book Tag!

Doing this tag was so much fun! Since I’m relatively new to the blogosphere I haven’t been tagged to do this but I saw it on the lovely Kaya’s page over at A Fictional Bookworm and had to give it a try. I can’t find the original creator of the tag (so if you know, please let me know down below and they can be recognised properly!)

Here we go!

How many books are too many in a series?

There are never too many in my eyes! I ADORE paranormal romance and some of my favourite series (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Immortals After Dark and Psy-Changeling) hit 15+ books. It’s like they know I love them and never want me to have to suffer withdrawals!

You can buy BDB books here, IAD books here and Psy-Changeling books here.

How do you feel about cliff hangers?

I severely dislike them. I know they’re meant to keep you on the edge of your seat and anticipating the next read but…I just can’t. I’m a HEA gal and that’ll never change!

Hardback or paperback?

Always, always hardback. They’re hard wearing, look absolutely glorious and make life easier to read. It’s a no brainer in my eyes!

Favourite book?

Damn. There’s no way I can pick just one! Have a look at my Goodreads Favourite Shelf … to see all 78 of them haha… but if I had to choose my favourite book of this year? Hands down it would be His Billionaire Bride by Madeline Ash (see my review here). It’s just so…sweet! How could you ever resist the lure of Edwin Prince?!

Pre-Order it for September 3, 2019 release: AMAZON

Least favourite book?

Tess of the D’Urburvilles. I had to read this in school and it was brutally descriptive, complicated and slow. I DNF at around 30% and haven’t ever looked back!

Love triangle…yes or no?

That would be a nope. I’m not a fan of these (with the exception of Twilight). I’m such a sap when I read and I can’t stand someone getting hurt or rejected just because there happens to be a hotter, smarter, funnier etc character. The HEA endings in these never feel quite so happy.

The most recent book you couldn’t finish?

That would be another ‘great classic’ that everyone else seems to love… or at least find meaning in that makes it worth reading. It was A Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I mean the book won a freaking Nobel Prize and the newest cover edition is gorgeous. I tried, I really tried. But I DNF at around 20% when this came up last week for my book club read and the story just kept dragging on.

A book you’re currently reading?

I’ve been reading three recently – one for fun and two for ARC August (created by Octavia and Shelly over at Read. Sleep. Repeat. ). The Art of Taxidermy was one I picked up in the library the other day because I’m a sucker for a pretty cover and this one doesn’t disappoint! The other two are Our Stop and The Love Solution which I really need to finish but seem to be dragging on slowly. RTC for these, which should be sometime next week.

The Art of Taxidermy can be bought here. The Love solution here and Our Stop here.

The last book you recommended to someone?

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu. As Read Now on Netgalley, I couldn’t resist giving this graphic novel a try. It was so worth it! The art is absolutely gorgeous and the characters are super sweet. I also enjoyed the fact that there was such diverse representation in this book. Love is for everyone, in all shapes and forms.

Oldest book you’ve read (based on publication date)?

I don’t tend to read many older books (partly because I’m still in a mild hate-relationship with classics) so the oldest book I’ve read would have to be Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813, which I absolutely LOVE. Mr. Darcy is where it’s at, in my sappy opinion.

Check out the Puffins Classics re-issue in this stunning cover here.

Newest book you’ve read (based on publication date)?

This would have to be Mooncakes, again. It’s the latest release in my ARC shelf and comes out on October 15, 2019. Pre-order it on amazon if you’d like to try it when its released.

Favourite author?

This one is so hard to answer because I could name so many. My hands-down auto-buy authors (even when I’m broke!) would have to be Mariana Zapata, K. A. Tucker, Madeline Ash and J. R. Ward. These four ladies are practically made of gold in my eyes. They could do no wrong!

Buying books or borrowing them?

I definitely prefer to borrow books. I hardly read them twice, except for my favourites. So I’ll usually try a book first through an ARC or the library and then I’ll go and buy the ones that I adored and have to read again and again.

A book you dislike that everyone else loves?

There are so many! The one that I received the most flack for was The Hunger Games trilogy. When the movies were released my bookish friends were all going insane about it. I tried them, I really did. They’re just not for me though – especially with their love triangle.

Bookmarks or dog-ears?

Dog-ears are the equivalent of writing and highlighting books in my eyes – i.e a big NO NO. I just can’t. The pages are so perfect on their own! I love to find cute and quirky bookmarks though. Especially from BookBookOwl’s Bookish Designs – have a look at her bookmarks. They’re insanely good and super cute!

A book you can re-read over and over?

Pretty much anything by Mariana Zapata, J.R. Ward, Nalini Singh, Madeline Ash, K. A. Tucker and Kresley Cole. I think the one that I’ve re-read the most (according to Goodreads) is Lothaire. Bless his crazy vampire soul.

You can (and SHOULD) buy it: on AMAZON (or anywhere else you can get your hands on it!)

Can you read while listening to music?

If the music is mellow and at a low volume, then yes. Otherwise I just get distracted and find myself singing along… haha. It’s particularly weird if the mood of the music doesn’t quite match the vibe of the book. They’ve gotta gel otherwise I’ll be fighting laughter and tears at the same time.

Multiple POV or one POV?

I’m a big fan of multiple POV. Unpopular opinion here: but I love it when the author just randomly changes the POV without a chapter heading or any warning. It keeps me on my toes! I enjoy trying to keep up with multiple events as well as perspectives. You can gain a lot more information this way and it can make trying to predict the ending of the book a lot more enjoyable, in my opinion.

Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days on average?

I love to just binge read a good book. Most of the time I’ll read the book in one sitting, or at the very least in one day. My Goodreads Challenge Goal is to finish a book a day (approx. – I’ve given myself some leeway on this since I also have to try and study sometime as well… unfortunately).

Who do you tag?

Anyone who wants to try this!

// do you have any of the same answers as me? what book do you dislike that everyone else loves? //

Jen

    1. I’m glad someone else agrees! I can’t stand it when there’s literally pages describing a paddock 🤣 I’ll never be that interested in a book haha. Thanks for commenting!

  1. Ooooh I love your unpopular opinion on the hunger games!!!! Also the love triangle in it sucked so haaaaaaard!! And although I mostly liked the series myself, as someone who doesn’t like many popular series (hi Harry Potter, hi Six of Crows, hi The Raven Boys etc etc…) I fully support people with opinions that go against the grain. Fab post Jen :))))

  2. Amazing post! Wow that Nalini Singh series looks MASSIVE. I really need to get back into reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, I read the first two and stalled even though Zsadist was my fave of them and his book was the third one if i remember correctly. Agreed on hardcovers! And even though I don’t mind them, agreed with your views on love triangles. Funny thing, I usually end up getting all mushy toward the loser of the love triangle since I feel sorry for him ROFL. It’s like the author’s attempt to prop up the winner backfires, lol. Final note, Can Lothaire be read standalone/independent of a series?

    1. Thank you 😀 Yeah there are so many psy-changeling books and still more being released so it’s just going to keep growing! Zsadist is my fav too! I’m a total sucker for the tortured hero (who’s not quite a hero) ❤ If you enjoy reading about him you'll definitely enjoy Lothaire. As a series you'll get more out of it by reading the rest of the IAD but considering there are so many of them it's not entirely necessary. Each book focuses on two new main characters but references others from the series as well. I read it stand-alone the first time and loved it! 😀 I also completely agree with you about rooting for the underdog in love triangles. Hope you enjoy Lothaire!

  3. I just finished Wolf’s Rain. I loved it, but… I just can’t write a review of it because there are really only so many things you can say about a book that deep into the series that hasn’t already been said a million times (at least when the series is good). I kind of hate that about long running book series. It is also why so few authors can keep me interested that deep.

    1. I get what you mean. It can be hard to ferret out specific things on a book long in to a series that differentiates it from others or makes it worth reading. I usually don’t write reviews for them either, for that reason 😛 I haven’t gotten around to reading Wolf Rain yet though. Was it any good?

      1. It really was! I liked that it was embedded in the original two changeling groups in the series; Snow Dancer and Dark River. Probably because those are my favorites of the series.

      2. I’m so glad you enjoyed it and that it features the other packs 😀 I can’t wait to get my hands on it! I love the Dark River pack! As well as Judd from Snow Dancer (he’s my favourite character in the series) ❤
